Gaming Love Affairs: chiliZ Edition
The chiliZ team lists their favorite games of all time, new and old alike.
Basically one in esports or gaming — regardless of what kind of gaming industry we talk about — just “falls” into the job. There’s always something — that one experience or game that really clicks a mental switch and makes gamers, and those who pursue careers based around the titles they love — do what they do. The start up team for chiliZ is no different. The only issue was I didn’t know who loved what. Thinking this was a great way to make a public foray for our motley crew of developers, creatives and thinkers I did just that — here’s the results:
Alexandre Dreyfus, CEO
The Love Affair(s):
Counter Strike 1.6
Battlefield 1942
The Guilty Pleasure: Angry Birds
The Corporate Answer: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
Fiobian Manicolo, CFO
The Love Affair(s):
The whole Monkey Island series
FIFA 2018
Reasoning for FIFA 2018:
Constantly kicks Carlos’ ass at it
Carlos Muray, Senior Graphic Designer
The Love Affair(s):
Age of Empires II: The Conquerors
Least Favorite Game: FIFA 2018
Reason for hating FIFA 2018:
Constantly gets his ass kicked by Fiobian at it
Jade Cruickshank, CPO
The Love Affair(s):
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Reasoning:
Editor’s Note: Only an evil smile was given. Our Chief People Officer enjoys shooting people, god help us all.
Dorian Michel, Graphic Designer
The Love Affair(s):
Half Life
Reasoning:
“I always loved FPS games and this was one of the first I ever played. Super immersive and a great story. It introduced me to PC gaming and I spent my childhood crashing Windows 95 trying to play it.”
Beetho Umana, Senior Editor, Digital Assets
The Love Affair(s):
Gran Turismo
Reasoning:
“I’m simple that way. I pretty much just love racing sports,F1, MotoGP, Turismo, and etc. The competitiveness you find online for racing — makes it uniquely exciting. I like the Forza games too but Gran Turismo is always going to be that 1st love.”
Richard Sambron, Head of Video Production
The Love Affair(s):
World of Warcraft
Starcraft 2
Editor’s Note: The actual answer is World of Warcraft. Addiction always wins over hobbies But Richard did explain that he chose, “StarCraft 2 because I love the Universe for how cinematic it is, and I love Strategy Games. WoW because I’m a big fan or MMORPGs and again — that universe man. Too bad the movie didn’t do it justice.”
Max Rabinovitch, CSO
The Love Affair(s):
Hearthstone
Yakuza 0
Sonic Adventure
FarCry 5 *crosses fingers that this will be true*
Reasoning:
“Sonic Adventure will always have a special place in my heart as this was the first adventure game I actually owned — I started my console career off on the Dreamcast, before that there was a lot of trips to friends houses to play SNES and later N64. Hearthstone has the top spot though — the pull of the EU server ladder grind is real.”
Roland Boothby, Head of Player Database Services
The Love Affair(s):
GoldenEye
Reasoning:
Editor’s note — no reason given other than this photo:
Thibaut Pelletier, CTO
The Love Affair(s):
Maniac Mansion
Day of the Tentacle
Reasoning:
“I’ve always been nostalgic about those old point and click games from the nineties. I spent so many hours trying to solve the most off-the-wall riddles in all those LucasArts games. I had to choose Maniac Mansion specifically because they have so much freedom of action, up to the point that you could kill your own character in these different hilariously cruel ways. Sometimes it got to that point where I’d lose focus on what needed to be done to forward into the game even. Day Of The Tentacle — that game just made me laugh, and honestly the graphics were amazing for its time.”
Hans Kleinsman, Head of Social Media
The Love Affair(s):
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Reasoning:
“My first team-play based FPS where you had to attack and defend objectives with 6vs6 team combat, with different classes and tactics to keep your team alive and reach objectives. Loved the game so much I ended up in a team, managed a semi pro team and was the World Cup admin for clanbase.”
Tom Pickering, Adviser & Shoutcastor, esports
The Love Affair(s):
Half Life
Reasoning:
“I grew up playing it, and it was my introduction to the shooter genre (alongside Unreal Tournament 1999). Fantastic storyline, game mechanics and thanks to the creation of the game, Counter Strike was created which is what got me into esports and shoutcasting to begin with.”
Marius Mikusauskas, Head of Back-End Development
The Love Affair(s):
War Thunder
Reasoning:
“It’s the most realistic MMO flight/fight simulator with aircraft from the World War and the Cold War ever, in my opinion. Based on actual historical battles and no frills. Loved it.”
