Findings from Chiliz’s second Global Fan Report—Chiliz Global Fan Report: U.S. Edition—the most comprehensive study of US sports fandom ever conducted, shows that the moment is now.

The data tells a story of convergence. Regulatory tailwinds. Surging digital appetite. A generation of fans who don’t just want to watch sport, they want to own a piece of it. Taken individually, each of these trends is encouraging. Taken together, they represent something far more significant, a perfect storm of conditions that makes the US market not just ready for Fan Tokens™, but built for them.

The Regulatory Green Light Has Arrived

Any conversation about digital assets in the US has historically begun and ended in the same place, regulatory uncertainty. That ceiling has now lifted. New guidance from the SEC and CFTC is providing the clarity that the industry and crucially, the sports organisations we work with, has been waiting for. Fan Tokens™ and digital collectibles are entering a framework that makes them viable, credible, and scalable for mainstream adoption.

This isn’t a small development. It fundamentally changes the conversation we can have with US sports teams, leagues, and their commercial partners. Chiliz has been building toward this moment since 2021, having explored Web3-powered fan engagement opportunities with some of the country’s leading sports organisations across the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLS – largely during the early phases of crypto adoption, amid limited regulatory clarity. 1 in 10 fans of US Sports – 13% of those based in the US and 9% internationally – already own Fan Tokens or digital collectibles. That number didn’t exist eight years ago. Zoom out globally, and the picture becomes even more compelling. More than half of international fans, 53% are interested in Fan Tokens™ and digital collectibles as part of their digital experience. US sports, by virtue of their worldwide reach, don’t just represent a domestic opportunity. Every NBA, NFL, MLB and MLS franchise carries a global fanbase that is actively seeking deeper connection.

The Demand for Digital Is Structural, Not Cyclical

79% of fans, across every market surveyed, agree that technology and digital platforms play a pivotal role in enhancing their fan experience. This is not a preference. It is an expectation. Fans have been reshaped by a decade of streaming, social media, and on-demand content. They no longer accept being passive recipients of sport. They want interaction, personalisation, and access.

This shift is perhaps most visible in how fans consume content away from live action. 83% of fans actively value non-live content, behind-the-scenes footage, social media access, exclusive digital coverage. The appetite for intimacy with teams and athletes is insatiable, and it extends far beyond the ninety minutes or four quarters of the game itself.

Fan Tokens™ are the most natural expression of this appetite. They are not a bolt-on product or a speculative asset, they are a digital infrastructure for the kind of engaged, participatory fandom that modern sports fans already expect. The report validates what Chiliz has always known, the fan experience is evolving, and digital ownership is at its core.

The Power of Players: A Fan Token Insight

One of the most revealing findings in the Global Fan Report concerns the relationship between fans and athletes and its implications for Fan Token design are profound.

41% of fans say that players or managers are the single biggest factor determining which teams they support. Almost half, 47% admit they would change their team allegiance entirely if their favourite player left. Michael Jordan, decades after his last game, is still recognised as the greatest US sports figure of all time by one in five fans globally, outranking every active star across every league.

The Leagues Are the Launchpad

The global footprint of US sport is the final piece of the puzzle and it is staggering.

The NBA is the most followed US sport globally, with three quarters of international sports fans saying they follow the league. The NFL commands the loyalty of two thirds. Baseball, soccer and hockey each have their own passionate global communities. The New York Giants top NFL support internationally. The LA Lakers and LA Dodgers lead their respective sports. These franchises don’t just have fans, they have global communities numbering in the hundreds of millions.

Fan Tokens™ allow those communities to participate. A fan in Seoul, São Paulo, or Lagos who wears the Lakers jersey and knows the roster by heart now has a mechanism to turn that passion into something tangible, a stake, a vote, an experience, a connection. What the Global Fan Report ultimately reveals is that the conditions for Fan Token adoption in the United States have never been more aligned.

The fan appetite is proven and growing, 26% of US fans say Fan Tokens™ would be the digital engagement product they’re most likely to use in the next twelve months, ahead of digital collectibles and prediction markets. The cultural infrastructure, global leagues, iconic athletes, and passionate fanbases are already in place. And the broader shift toward digital, participatory fandom is structural and accelerating.
